Case Study 2 - Media Language

Arctic Monkeys - 'When the Sun Goes Down'
Released 16th January 2006

Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band, who formed in 2002, in the suburbs of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O'Malley, and Matt Helders. The band has released five studio albums, and the bands debut album became the fastest selling debut album in British music history. The band have won five Brit awards; winning Best British Group twice, and have twice been nominated for the Grammy Awards. They were heralded as one of the first bands to come to the public attention through the internet (fan based sites), with the commentators suggesting they represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed. Arctic Monkeys are also regarded as one of the most prominent bands to be part of the post punk revival in the UK; this was after achieving commercial success and spawning two number on singles with their debut album.

  1. Your blog is becoming interesting. There is certainly potential here Zoe with the notion of identity - British and gender identity. The Arctic Monkey's music video is an excellent example of British social theatre and film genre transferring into music videos.

I like the way you have inter textually linked Stephen Graham's role as a pimp with his role as Combo who represents all that the National Front stands for. Interestingly in the TV series Combo is able to transcend his dark side and become a kind of anti hero.

You could do a case study on the representation of women in music videos - victim and vamp!!! If you're interested I can offer support. This of course links to Goodwin's theory about voyeuristic treatment of women in music videos - the girl in "When the Sun Goes Down" is an example of where objectified /sexualised images of women in the media are accepted as normal and fuel abuse!

Well done Zoe your analysis and research is much stronger than last year.

    1. I have completed my Case Study, if you could take a look that would be helpful

  2. You have invested a great deal of thought and effort into this case study on a controversial and disturbing music video where there is no happy ending, thus it's roots like in British social realist plays and films, for example the colour saturation and mise-en-scene closely resemble the visual style of Shane Meadow's "Dead Man's Shoes" and particularly the TV series of "This is England".

Your case study reflects a mainly proficient understanding of genre and excellent intellectual involvement. Well done Zoe keep referencing media theory and keep making inter textual references in your case studies.

    A pleasure to mark.
