Album Layout

Here is a video of my album plan for my print productions, I was inspired by the David Bowie album 'The Next Day', regarding the layout, not the images on the album. I prefer this layout as the album is unique, whereas it is not simply like normal music albums, also I feel the panorama effect will look far better with a bigger surface area.

Whilst producing this plan, I recalled back to my original idea of using oil pastels for the front cover (relating to the work of Jungle Doctors). I have decided to instead use the classic marble effect, I think this will be easy and simple to do colors of red, yellow and orange, to go well with the back image/panel, and to go with the concept of a sunset. The image shown below is one I have found on the internet, but it gives a brief idea of what I am going to try and portray. I have chosen to do this, not only because it links with the albums already made by Jungle Doctors, but because of it's uniqueness, it is an incorporation of art.

Second Day Of Shooting With Stills Camera

I very much liked the images I had taken on my trip to Lowestoft, but I felt that the images did not link well enough to the title of the track, I felt that boats should be included somewhere within my print productions. So Anna and I visited Lowestoft broad which half of our music video is shot, and I tried to gather some shots regarding boats. I produced two more panorama images for the inside of my album, and I feel that these images are far stronger, I will go onto further detail with this when I have chosen my final images.

I prefer the second image out of the two, firstly because the white boat is see completely. Also because the main character is directly in the middle of the image, which will look perfect regarding the inside panels of my print productions. When editing I hope for the main character to stand out in the image further, and for the difference between the two sides of the of the  platform to show their different colors more. By this I mean, the left hand side of the image is much like dusk and is darker, and the right is full of light and the water looks more blue, when editing I can make this aspect of the image even more intriguing.

I have exhibited all of the still images I have taken at my second shoot in contact sheet form. This is easier for me to decide what images I would like to take a closer look at and decide whether to edit them or not. When at this shoot, I focused largely on my poster for a magazine, so I have produced many portrait images of the location. But for now I am focusing on my album.

After selecting certain images from my contact sheets, I have enlarged them into wallet size to analyse further. This is helpful, as when editing the choice has been narrowed down to images which truly relate to Jungle Doctors and the music video.

UK Storms - December Floodings

I have decided to do a small post of the December flooding of 2013/14. I have chosen to do this because when going back to the location of our music video (Lowestoft) I noticed the tracks of trucks across the sand, also how the sand had moved to the beach huts. I was shooting in the aftermath of the flooding.

Deciding Fonts

Font regarding print productions is a major aspect, as it’s what draws the audience in, and also without it the name of the band would be unknown, so it is vital that it is legible. When considering the font for my print productions, I felt that it was important for me to study the fonts of Jungle Doctors albums and try to choose one which relates to them. I selected five fonts from Photoshop and produced a questionnaire to ask the public. I asked individuals from the target audience mainly, but also considered the views of individuals outside of the target audience.

My Questionnaire:

I asked individuals mainly representing the target audience, but I also considered the views of people older and younger than that of the target audience.

Which font do you like the most? Why?

5 - This young individual is 14 years old, it chose number five because he felt that it fun and legible. However his views are not required as much as he does not fit the target market category.

1 - The female answering this question is 18 years old, she is a perfect example of the specific target audience. She explains that she appreciates number 1 as a font because it is 'unique and stands out from the others'. Personally I feel that number 1 is quite enticing as the little arrows resemble small beach huts, which are exhibited frequently in the music video.

2 - I asked a women of the age of 30 on which font she found most popular, which was number 2, because she thought that  it was unique to the other fonts, and she had not seen album covers with that font before. However I feel that the bands name in capital letters is far more bolder and stands out to the buyer.

Which font relates most to the font already used by Jungle Doctors? How?

3 - Because the letters are bold and intriguing - 'each letter stands out on it's own'.

3 - Because the letters look far better in capitals, and that the letters are 'close together'

4 - 'Although it seems impossible to find smaller 'o's, I feel that number 4 resembles Jungle Doctors the most, especially the 'g'

Do any particularly appeal to the target audience (16 -19) ? How?

5 - The young boy explained that the font number 5 resembled that of a popular store, which mains target market is 16 + girls.

1 - Because it has a contemporary edge to it, relevant as the target age group focuses on brands etc

The women could not really have much of a say on this particular aspect, as this is not her niche market.

Do any of the fonts look unprofessional?

2 - 'Looks as if someone has drawn it very badly'

2 / 5 - 'They are a classic font which does not appeal to me at all, like comic cans'

1 - 'The arrows confuse me, and I do not see there relevance'

From collecting this data, I have realized that asking an individual out of the target audience is not very relevant, although it does give an aspect on what not to do. Asking someone just below the target audience, was actually very helpful, because they seemed to know a lot about the target market, and appealing to a bigger target market is always far better.

A big aspect of the target audience is that they are 16-19 year old females. Anna and I are this age, which is perfect as we can relate well to what the audience needs. The stereotypical outlook of girls is that they like to go shopping, which in some aspects is true. After studying closely the fonts, I realized that some of them related to well known high street retail shops, resulting in the enticement and relevance of the target audience.

I have decided on Font 1; it was my original favourite, because of it's uniqueness. I also think it links the most to Jungle Doctors album fonts currently, with the fact that each letter is a different size, and stands out separately. Rather than being plain and boring.

Editing ideas

I was playing around on photoshop with the different editing tools, to think of ideas of the way I could portray my images. I much prefer the first image, as the sky looks dreamlike, and the full location is seen. However I do feel that they main character of the music video needs to be situated somewhere within the image. Regarding the image below, I feel that the sky is far too bright that it looks like a white studio background. I plan to visit the Lowestoft broads at dusk, to hopefully capture some boats, and the sky in its prime.

Why Headphones?

Anna and I decided that the use of headphones would be a fantastic idea to introduce the song, and appeal to the target market. Our first aim was for the song to begin by playing out of the headphones, and once they entered the characters ears the song began to play properly (making the audience feel they have just put headphones in themselves). However this was too hard and complicated for us to do in such a short space of time, so we decided that our character should put the headphones in just as the lyrics began. Foals - My Number is a good example, of the transition of distant music to that of straight in the ears. But I feel that Clean Bandit - Rather Be is a perfect example of what Anna and I are trying to portray.

Analysed Images

After looking through my contact sheets I selected particular images which I felt related most to 'Boat Song'. I have exhibited them on a power point, and have analysed each image with positives and negatives regarding my print productions.

Print Production Ideas

I have included a little silhouette of a boat by the name "Jungle Doctors" in each of my plans, if I can I would like to incorporate this as it links to the idea of the beach, and it is something they could be recognise by their audience in the future.
