Current Music Videos With The Beach In Them

Once Anna and I knew that the location for our media production would be at the beach, we felt that it was a good idea to inspect other music videos which have the beach incorporated in them. We were studying mainly the shot types and how the directors have incorporated the beach in their video, I noticed that regarding the genre of music the shots are very different. I produced a powerpoint, with shots that particularly stood out to me in the music video.

Rizzle Kicks - Down With The Trumpets

The use of the beach huts stood out to me in this music video. I felt that it was impressive that the same location was used, but the different shots made it more interesting. The third shot I have chosen I felt would be effective in our music video, as we could have a main character(s) walking past, which could represent isolation and the idea of being caged in. I also particularly appreciate the last shot I have chosen, as I think that it gives the audience of an idea of the location overall, and the colorful beach huts are effective. It is a perfect example of why I would like colorful and unique beach huts in our video rather than plain and boring ones, as I feel that they will be less effective.

Calvin Harris - Feel So Close

Only certain aspects of this music video stood out to me; mainly the character in his car, with the sunset behind him. Anna and I felt that a good shot would be for our character to be driving during the sunset with the beach in the background. I feel that this will be effective as his silhouette will stand out and make him the focus, as well as the sunset. I also felt that the landscape shot of the truck with the sunset in the background was effective. Anna and I have decided that having only one character with a story would be effective in our music video. So the last shot i have chosen would be effective as it could represent a persons isolation and loneliness.

Mumford and Sons - Lover Of The Light

There is a segment in Mumford and Sons music video, where the main character is on/near the beach. I feel that some of the shots, specifically the shots of the sunset, are very effective and eye catching for the audience. The long shots of the location with the characters silhouette in the distance are unique and intriguing, the shots are very beautiful and dream like, which is what Anna and I would like to incorporate into our music video - a sense of paradise.

Two Door Cinema Club - Sun

It seems that Two Door Cinema Club have produced the same idea as Anna and I; Sun = Beach. Boat = Beach. This music video is very consistent with its shots, the band are performing on beach huts. This gave Anna and I the idea to incorporate beach huts within our video, however we would like them to be far more colorful.

Jamie Woon - Shoulda

Jamie Woons' music video I felt was the most helpful and effective when thinking of ideas for different shots; throughout the video different concepts and locations of the beach were exhibited, each shot gave a different idea. The landscape shots particularly stood out to me, as the idea we have at the moment is for one character to be part of an isolated place, this is what is established in "shoulda". By placing one character in a landscape shot, it emphasises the desolation of the beach, and how alone the character is. The close ups of particular aspects of the beach (rocks, grass, sea) give the audience an idea of what the scenery is and puts them in the characters point of view. They also make lovely, beautiful shots. When planning our music video I will look back and study this video, as I believe it will help massively with ideas.

Duke Dumont - Need u (100%)

Regarding this music video there was only a certain section were the beach was involved, however I felt that the section was relevant and gave some good ideas. I like the idea of his silhouette against the sunset, and how as it progresses the shots become closer and closer. One idea I have for our video is for it to begin with the characters silhouette on the beach with the sun rising at the beginning of the video, and then the sun setting at the end. In the last shot I have chosen, I felt that it was effective as it closes in on the characters emotions, and brings the character and the audience more close.

Bands which relate to Jungle Doctors

Before beginning our planning for our music video, we felt that looking at artists which relate to Jungle Doctors, and researching their videos would give us some ideas on what we could incorporate in our own. We felt that the genre was indie pop/rock.

Foals

Foals are a English rock/indie band, we felt that they linked with Jungle Doctors, as they have very unique vocals, and music videos. In the music video to 'Blue Blood' a young boy is the main subject and focus, Anna and I are thinking of doing the same for our video, however the boy will be much older. The narrative of this music video, is a young boy expressing his hidden talent, and hunting for acceptance ('help me accept it'). The women he is singing towards, could be his mother or a crush, but it is clear that the boy does not care about what anyone thinks apart from the women's opinion. An intertextual reference could be that to Billy Elliot. The boy also has a splodge of blue paint on his shirt, indicating "blue blood".

Little Comets

Little Comets are an indie rock trio from Jarrow and Washington, they are well known for their 'kitchen sink indie music'. The fact that the music video to 'worry' is in black and white, is something that Anna and I have taken note of, because our music video may look more unique in black and white. However it may also not work well at all, as we are filming during the summer, and the song is a happy and upbeat pace, so by filming at a beach and making it black and white, it could lead to a dreary shabby feel. In this music video, there is no real narrative structure, it is a collaboration of videos taken at gigs.

Mystery Jets

One thing that stands out with Mystery Jets is not just their unique vocals, but their videos too. Unlike with little comets video, Mystery Jets - Someone Purer has an obvious narrative; it seems that the main character is living with guilt towards the fact that he killed his sister or someone close to him. The lyrics link well with the video, as it is explaining that when he 'was once a kid with a pure and innocent soul', which has now been corrupted by the tragedy - 'the devil knows my name'. He wants to be forgiven and for his mistakes to be understood- 'wash away my sins'. The idea of the prostitutes and him throwing away the cross, suggest more sins, and emphasis the fact that he is not 'someone purer' or 'innocent'. Anna and I, would not have a narrative as in depth as this, because it would take a long time to come up and plan such a strong narrative, also some aspects of this video are impossible to do with the equipment available.

Two Door Cinema Club

Two Door Cinema Club are known for their upbeat music videos, coinciding with their buoyant tracks. The music video exhibited is very unusual and does not have a particular storyline to it, the idea of this video is random and gives the sense of it being a "weird dream". In the sense of it being a dream, it is very effective as the name of the song is "Sleep Alone", relating the word 'Sleep' to the word 'Dream' = 'When I’m only fast asleep'. Although this music video is captivating and unique, it is impossible for Anna and I to have ideas from this video, as it is far too complex and completely unworkable for us to achieve this (regarding the electrical equipment, props and characters).

Theme park

When seeing Theme Park for the first time at Latitude Festival I was immediately hooked, I was intrigued by the way that they had a unique way of presenting their instruments. The music video exhibited is random to say the least  (dominoes, limbo). There are girls shown in very little clothing, which does emphasis the discriminatory controversial aspect that women are seen as sex objects. It is a colorful music video which I feel regarding this genre is needed, the music is usually upbeat and dancy, which is supposed to lighten the audiences mood, hence the bright eye catching colors.

Study of lyrics

Jungle Doctors - Beach Song
Baby please, can we row my boat tonight?
We’ll row far
We’ll row past the trees tonight
Baby please, can we row my boat tonight?
We’ll go fast
We’ll take a flight tonight
oooooooooohhhhhhhhh
oooooooooohhhhhhhhh
Baby please, can we try our love tonight?
We’ll roll the dice
We’ll take a chance tonight
Can we please?
Can we try our love tonight?
We’ll play our cards
We’ll take flight tonight
ooooooooooohhhhhhhh
ooooooooooohhhhhhhh
  • 'can we row my boat tonight?' - asking her out on a date? innuendo?
  • serenading the individual?
  • no specific gender he is singing to, but obvious it is a lover/potential love - 'baby'
  • all the things he wishes he could say but never will?
  • fantasy - does his admirer know of his existence?
  • about lead singer pursuing lover
  • dream world of just him and his lover
  • 'dice', 'cards' - betting on their love?

Evidence of contact with the band

After deciding that "Jungle Doctors" were the band that we wanted to produce a music video for, Anna emailed the band requesting that we use their song 'Beach Song'. The bands manager Steve responded and said that Jungle Doctors are an unsigned band, as we were not definitely sure, and that we could use the song. However he encouraged us to check out some of the bands new releases to see if we would prefer to make a music video to them. We observed "better" and "talk to me", but felt that although they were good songs, we had already came up with a lot of ideas for "boat song", and felt that it fitted more with what we were trying to incorporate.

Possible Locations

I began my investigation into the possible location of the beach, with a simple mood board. The two beaches that came to mind first were Holkham (Pine woods, Sand Dunes, Landscape) and Wells Next to the Sea (beach huts, steam train, small town, docking harbor), as they both have iconic features to them. The images exhibited on my mood board are secondary images from Google, however I plan to visit both destinations and take some shots of my own.

Anna and I chose to go with the song 'Beach song' by "Jungle Doctors"; after conversing with our teacher it was agreed that the fact that the scene has already been set for the music video (beach), it will be very helpful when thinking of location and ideas.

Possible Locations

We began by starting with the obvious - what beaches we would be shooting at. Firstly we felt that Holkham beach would be an interesting place to shoot as it is a quite and desolate space. The fact that the woods lead onto the beach, is helpful too as they could be a good place to shoot, and show our characters journey. The example given is a perfect place to shoot.

The beach huts in Holkham I believe are also a superb place to shoot. I like them as they are unique and colorful, unlike some beach huts I have seen. Holkham is a quiet place, and although the beach huts are there, it still looks desolate and our character will stand out.

When walking along Holkham beach, you come across Wells - Next -The - Sea, a seaside town, which is much more populated than that of Holkham. It would be a great place to shoot as we would be able to show the contrast of the isolation of Holkham beach, and the Hustle and Bustle of Wells. Aside from the beautiful architecture of the towns streets, Wells also has a small train which takes the passengers along the beach to a small campsite, this train would be a perfect place to shoot.

Potential unsigned bands

When deciding which sort of unsigned band we would be hunting for, we thought about the pace of the song, the genre etc. We decided that we wanted a quite fast paced song, because we felt that we could have more fun with the filming and editing, also we went for the Indie Pop genre, as we felt that genres such as rap/hip hop would be very hard to portray in a music video. We were considering an artist that was related to bands such as Foals, Two Door Cinema Club and Mystery Jets.

Jungle Doctors

The first artists we came across were "Jungle Doctors", a band from London. We felt that they would be good to use, as their songs are very upbeat and catchy. The song 'fugitives' we felt was very memorable and quick, which we thought would be good for our music video, as we could build a story to it, and have a fun location. However we felt that it was too fast paced, causing the edit to be tricky.

The next song which we felt was very interesting, and a potential song was 'Boat Song', we felt that this already had a theme to it; the beach. Also we felt that the song was interesting and had a catchy beat to it, resulting in the audience being drawn in, and can be used to make a promising video.

Although Jungle Doctors already have a music video to their song, Anna and I studied it, and felt that we could do a lot more with the song provided, and make a more intense and captivating music video.

King No- One

"King No-One" from Yorkshire were the next band we encountered, we felt that they had an up beat summer feel to them, which was relevant as we would be shooting in the summer. Their song 'Vulpix' stood out to us the most out of the three songs given, this is because we felt that their song 'silent song', was too slow and less fast paced, which gave us less of an idea on what we could do for a video. One problem with the song 'Vulpix' is that it is not clear on what the vocalist is saying, as it is important to understand the vocals as they could relate to the story-line of the video.

Interesting Music Videos

What captivated me first about this music video is that it has a modern grime interpretation of traditional fairy tales. The fairy tales have been taken into account but refurbished into their own, to attract a younger audience; for example, the idea of Rapunzel’s tower,  has been placed within blocks of flats in east London. Costumes, Locations and Characters in traditional fairy tales have been considered, but upgraded to a more modern and urban feel. This could suggest to the audience that fairy tales can be seen in daily life, it just takes imagination.

At a young age I always found ‘The wall’ by Pink Floyd, a very interesting, but disturbing music video. What mesmerised me about it was the fact that animation had been linked in with normal filming, which makes this music video unique and much different to others. It targets school children; as the idea of teachers being evil villains can be relate able to some, also targeting them by suggesting that the school is a prison, much like how some school children feel.

Arctic Monkeys - When the sun goes down, has a very interesting and eye opening music video. It focuses on the idea of prostitution and pimps. The man in this video is represented as the girls pimp, harmful aggressive and arrogant. The phrase at the beginning of the video, 'right beside us are the ones hidden by the night', this suggests to the audience that anyone around us could be an escort, they keep it hidden and subtle, meaning that no one should be judged or treated differently because of their employment. The target audience for this music video are a much older audience, as some aspects of the video are hard hitting and emotionally realistic.

Once coming across this music video, I felt that it was very captivating and unusual. The video opens with a motivational speaker discussing, what seems, that change is inevitable and you need to move outside your comfort zone. The audience is led in worship by a typical American TV style minister. The repeated phrase 'When the fire starts to burn, and it starts to spread' could suggest that once a situation starts, it grows and becomes worse, for example in the video the minister begins to sing and dance in a possessed fashion, as the song grows his followers begin to dance in the same way. Also as the song progresses more weird and unusual things begin to occur; the man being turned into a black cat and one man beating up the other.
