Research on Publics views on Jungle Doctors

I have chosen to do some independent primary research on the public's view of Jungle Doctors and my target audience. I have submitted an idea of some of the questions I asked my member of the public, but when on location I changed and developed some of them. I recorded the target audiences responses on my video camera, this was so I had evidence of my research, and a unique way of presenting my responses. Hopefully the results of this questionnaire will help me with regards to my planning and editing. I wanted to ask at least seven individuals from our target audience, however due to lack of time, I chose just one member. furthermore I made sure that she was part of our niche group (Female, white British, 15 - 18 years old), as so, once getting the results, Anna and I could relate the information back to our work, and improve or add certain aspects to appeal to our chosen demographic.

Name: Thea Kerrison
Gender: Female
Age: 17

I began with a simple question, as to what magazines the individual reads, Thea explained that she reads celebrity magazines often, which highlight the fact that many individuals style is inspired by iconic characters (celebrities). This links as well with fashion magazines; young peoples costume are inspired by what is seen as "fashionable". For example many young girls are mesmerized by the style of Alexa Chung, and try as hard as possible to dress like her. This research resulted in Anna and I looking in Magazines and music videos containing 'celebs' to find the inspiration for the costume of our main character.

Thea justified my point above by explaining that her style is inspired by magazines, also she explained that websites,  peers and shop windows also take a part in this inspirations. 'Shop windows' indicate the relevance of high street brands, and link well to mine and Anna's character in our music video.

I was interested to know what radio stations Thea listened to regarding the fact that if she listens to a pop station  (Kiss FM) than it is very unlikely she would hear Jungle Doctors, and she may not be the right niche group, as someone who likes the indie genre is who we are submitting. Thankfully Thea explained that, although she does not listen to the radio much, she listens to Radio 1 or XFM, which are two stations where 'Boat Song' would be heard, and already has been heard (xfm).

I then went on to ask where she thinks Jungle Doctors would be played, and Thea assumed the same as I did; 'an indie station - XFM'. This is where Jungle Doctors have been played before on their 'new music' set, which links in perfectly to what mine and Annas niche group is about. After receiving this information I produced a short study on the exhibition of Jungle Doctors on XFM.

I felt that it was important to see what bands Thea felt linked with Jungle Doctors. Like I predicted she listed bands which relate to the genre. However some of the bands she listed I had not considered before, like The Maccabees, this meant I could research into this artist and their music videos.

I felt that it was important for Anna and I to know whether we had picked the right target audience, so by asking an individual from our niche group whether they would buy the song or not, it would answer this question. Thea felt that it was 'catchy' and 'upbeat', and explained that yes she would purchase the song.

As Thea is part of our target audience, I though it would be useful to get her opinion on what age Jungle Doctors appeal to, she felt that younger ('youth age') and older people would invest their time into Jungle Doctors, as they are 'fresh'. However as a niche audience, Anna and I could not appeal to such a wide target age, so we are sticking to our 15 - 18 year olds, as this covers young adults, and teens.

To cut down our target market, Anna and I felt that if the song promoted to one gender, than it would be more effective as the print productions and layout of video could cater for that gender. Thea felt that it could promote to both male and female, however I feel that the fact the band could be singing to girl, a female audience would be more likely to enjoy Jungle Doctors.

There was a piece of footage which became corrupt, and I was not able to upload it, so instead I will explain what the video consisted of. I asked Thea what first comes to mind when listening to Boat song;  she felt that the evening time, and going to the beach were relevant, she also suggested that sharing memories with friends could link well to the lyrics, and she also suggested a 'romantic partner'.

Shot List

Exhibited is the shot list I have produced for our music video, I worked on half of this after our footage was taken, I felt that this was far more helpful as I could put each shot in order according to the shot list. Resulting in me being organised and able to begin editing quicker than I would have done if I did not have such an in depth shot list.

Question 3

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

I began my peer assessment by asking many of my peers questions within in a questionnaire, this was to get their feedback and honest views anonymously. I made sure that they were of the same target audience, as so Anna and I could see if what we had done to appeal to the target audience was a success. The overall feedback was good, and 'exciting', which pleased both Anna and I. I began first with the exhibition of my feedback from my music video, some points helped with improvements Anna and I had made.

I produced the same idea regarding my print productions, peer analysis was vital, and changes were made and spotted which I may not have noticed myself. The feedback I received from my target audience that I had used photoshop well and promoted the idea of britishness effectively.

Without feedback from my audience I would not have known how successful I had portrayed the band and particularly the genre. Also without the agreement and eye of the audience, the album and the band would not be promoted, which makes the appeal to the audience imperative. Overall my target audience enjoyed my use of mise - en - scene within my print productions and my music video, the link between my print productions and my music video was clear and concise, resulting in my personal ideas being enjoyed by the target audience.

Question 4

How did you use technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The development in modern technology regarding the internet has been very useful, in fact without it, it would have been almost impossible to find the information needed about the artists, artists which link to our genre, and inspirations for our music video and print productions. I was able to notice any recurring motifs, and with out the internet I may have reflected the genre wrong, and also I would not have been able to back up my ideas with evidence.

Independent Study

As part of my independent study, I researched the life of an unsigned artist and the struggles they go through. As Jungle Doctors live in London, I was unable to do this regarding them. So I asked my friend Matilda Pine, who is an unsigned artist some questions. I planned to film her responses, however due to lack of time, and both of us not being around I chose to email her instead. As I am her friend, I have insightful knowledge of her pressures, and what she does to promote her music, which is helpful within this study.

I have exhibited the email as evidence of the conversation between Matilda Pine and I, but I have also produced a power point, including further information and analyzing each answer properly.
