Before beginning our planning for our music video, we felt that looking at artists which relate to Jungle Doctors, and researching their videos would give us some ideas on what we could incorporate in our own. We felt that the genre was indie pop/rock.
Foals
Foals are a English rock/indie band, we felt that they linked with Jungle Doctors, as they have very unique vocals, and music videos. In the music video to 'Blue Blood' a young boy is the main subject and focus, Anna and I are thinking of doing the same for our video, however the boy will be much older. The narrative of this music video, is a young boy expressing his hidden talent, and hunting for acceptance ('help me accept it'). The women he is singing towards, could be his mother or a crush, but it is clear that the boy does not care about what anyone thinks apart from the women's opinion. An intertextual reference could be that to Billy Elliot. The boy also has a splodge of blue paint on his shirt, indicating "blue blood".
Little Comets
Little Comets are an indie rock trio from Jarrow and Washington, they are well known for their 'kitchen sink indie music'. The fact that the music video to 'worry' is in black and white, is something that Anna and I have taken note of, because our music video may look more unique in black and white. However it may also not work well at all, as we are filming during the summer, and the song is a happy and upbeat pace, so by filming at a beach and making it black and white, it could lead to a dreary shabby feel. In this music video, there is no real narrative structure, it is a collaboration of videos taken at gigs.
Mystery Jets
One thing that stands out with Mystery Jets is not just their unique vocals, but their videos too. Unlike with little comets video, Mystery Jets - Someone Purer has an obvious narrative; it seems that the main character is living with guilt towards the fact that he killed his sister or someone close to him. The lyrics link well with the video, as it is explaining that when he 'was once a kid with a pure and innocent soul', which has now been corrupted by the tragedy - 'the devil knows my name'. He wants to be forgiven and for his mistakes to be understood- 'wash away my sins'. The idea of the prostitutes and him throwing away the cross, suggest more sins, and emphasis the fact that he is not 'someone purer' or 'innocent'. Anna and I, would not have a narrative as in depth as this, because it would take a long time to come up and plan such a strong narrative, also some aspects of this video are impossible to do with the equipment available.
Two Door Cinema Club
Two Door Cinema Club are known for their upbeat music
videos, coinciding with their buoyant tracks. The music video exhibited is very
unusual and does not have a particular storyline to it, the idea of this video
is random and gives the sense of it being a "weird dream". In the
sense of it being a dream, it is very effective as the name of the song is
"Sleep Alone", relating the word 'Sleep' to the word 'Dream' = 'When I’m
only fast asleep'. Although this music video is captivating and unique, it is
impossible for Anna and I to have ideas from this video, as it is far too
complex and completely unworkable for us to achieve this (regarding the electrical
equipment, props and characters).
Theme park
When seeing Theme Park for the first time at Latitude Festival I was immediately hooked, I was intrigued by the way that they had a unique way of presenting their instruments. The music video exhibited is random to say the least (dominoes, limbo). There are girls shown in very little clothing, which does emphasis the discriminatory controversial aspect that women are seen as sex objects. It is a colorful music video which I feel regarding this genre is needed, the music is usually upbeat and dancy, which is supposed to lighten the audiences mood, hence the bright eye catching colors.
This is very useful research particularly with considering was is achievable. I particularly like Blue blood. This is a music video which splendidly markets the band because of the use of the child with the dubbing an of the lead singer's voice and splendid synchronisation in the edit. I'm pleased you identified the inter textual reference to "Billy Elliott. I'd say this film has inspired the music video.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to see the emergence of your ideas which are strongly linked (at this stage of the course) to research.
